St Joseph’s Primary School was established by the Sisters of St Joseph in 1921 and is located in the Canterbury Council district in the Inner West Region of Sydney. The Josephites cared for the school community until 1985, when the first Lay Principal was appointed. Even though the Sisters no longer reside in the community, the school continues to give witness to Mary MacKillop’s dream to ‘Never see a need without doing something about it’. It is this vision that drives our school community and is evidenced by our diverse multiculturalism, variety of faith practices and extremes in learning need. Currently, the school caters for boys and girls from Kindergarten to Year 6 and is characterised by a high proportion (97%) of students with a Language Background Other Than English. The main languages in the school include: Arabic, Greek, Dinka, Korean, Filipino, and various Pacific Island languages.
The school enjoys a close relationship with the priests and the parish. Sacramental Programs for Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation are primarily school-based, ran by a team consisting of the Religious Education Co-ordinator, Class Teachers, Family Educator and other members of staff, along with our Parish Priest and Catechists. Many of our students are Maronite and Melkite Catholics who are confirmed at Baptism. The school also contains a number of students who are of the Orthodox faith.
